Shakira at her Washington DC press conference (April 22).

Colombian sensation Shakira continues to use her celebrity status in a positive way - most recently holding a press conference on Capitol Hill to ask The United States Congress to appropriate billions of dollars for the Global Campaign for Education.

The 31-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” singer took to the Washington D.C. podium on Tuesday (April 22), accompanied by about 50 students selected from around the country.

Shakira has said that the advocacy group is “pressing world leaders to provide funding for primary education for 72 million young children who now miss out on schooling as a result of poverty.”

The Grammy-winning singer added that the group also “aims to inspire support for 226 million older children who miss out on classes because of truancy or a lack of access to schools.”
