Except for a few things that I had an issue with, this book was quite good and entertaining to read. I didn't even know that this book came in a series. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to read it all the time. I enjoyed learning about the Amish religion and how they view things. Before this book, I didn't know anything about the Amish religion.
My two complaints is that Amish people believe things that is not true in the bible. They may think they are following the bible in all aspects but they are not.
My main issue was that in the character in this book was going through some rough times and thought it was because GOD was causing her suffering and that is simply not true. GOD is a loving GOD and you can find that in the bible. And unforeseen occurrences happen as well, and you can't blame GOD for all of that. In the bible, in the book of James, Chapter one and verse 13 it clearly states" When under trial,let no one say, "I am being tried by God." For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone."
My second issue was that the Amish people believe that GOD brings people to heaven when they die. That is simply not true. When you die, you are simply sleeping. There is no heaven or hell that you go to. Which can be found in the bible in ecclesiastics. In ecclesiastics it says in chapter 9, verse 5: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”
Other than that I truly enjoyed the book and would read another one by this author again. I just wish in the future people would actually read the bible and see what is honestly being said and not just twist the scriptures to fit their beliefs.

Thank you for your review, which I read because I'm reviewing the same book.
I would like to comment on your remarks about the Bible, and I pray that you will not think my response rude, as that is not my intention.
The verse you quoted in Ecclesiastes 9:5 needs to be read along with verse 6 to make sure that it is taken in context. (When you select one verse alone, many things can seem to be supported by scripture but are still not true, like taking part of Psalm 14:1 out of context could be used to "prove" there's no God.)
5 "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward,and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun," (Eccl 9:5-6, NIV).
Verse 6 shows that the meaning of verse 5 is not that heaven does not exist, but that the dead do not partake of life on earth anymore, so all that they had while living doesn't matter--that is, striving for earthly gain is a futile effort because we leave it behind when we die.
The entire book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon as he worked through his feelings at finding that nothing truly satisfies us aside from the love of God and a right relationship with Him.
As for evidence that there is heaven, here are a few verses:
Matthew 25:44-46
2 Corinthians 4:14 and 5:8
Gal 6:8-9
1 Peter, chapter 1 tells of our hope of resurrection to life with Christ.
Regarding trials and temptation:
If you read the book of Job, you will see that God gave Satan permission to subject Job to various (and horrible) trials. James chapter 1, verses 2-4 tells us to be glad when trials come because the testing of our faith makes us stronger. Then, in verses 13-14 James tells us to be sure that we don't think that trials are temptation because God does not tempt us--He tries and tests our faith, in order to make us stronger--but only Satan tempts us. This shows that God is Sovereign, and that He knows everything that will happen. In His wisdom (which we cannot comprehend), He allows things into our lives to strengthen our faith and to help us to grow into mature Christians.
And, God promises a way out of all temptation, if we seek Him for help in the midst:
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it," (1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV).
I hope that this is helpful to you, and I welcome any reply you may have. I do understand if you choose not to publish this comment, but I pray that you will take what I say to heart and ask God to give you wisdom (which is also mentioned in James 1).

I didn't mean to say that Heaven did not exist I believe in Heaven but that when I die, I do not go there. As one of Jehovah's witnesses we believe that only 144,000 anointed spiritual Christians will go to heaven and the rest of us will live on a paradise earth that GOD will prepare for us.
Ps. 37:9, 11, 29: “Evildoers themselves will be cut off, but those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth . . . The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.”
Rev. 14:1-3: “I saw, and, look! the Lamb [Jesus Christ] standing upon the Mount Zion [in heaven; see Hebrews 12:22-24], and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads. . . . And they are singing as if a new song . . . and no one was able to master that song but the hundred and forty-four thousand, who have been bought from the earth.”
What will those who go to heaven do there?
Rev. 20:6: “They will be priests of God and of the Christ, and will rule as kings with him for the thousand years.” (Also Daniel 7:27)
